Title: Minimizing Injuries from the Batted Baseball by Controlling Bat Performance and Bat Inertial Properties.
Summary: Recent advances in the material and manufacturing process of baseball and softball bats have dramatically increased bat performance. Concern has been raised that increases in bat performance may lead to increases in the severity and frequency of injuries from the batted ball. The PI is serving as the national program director to address this issue.

Title: A research program for determining and predicting the batted ball velocity of baseballs.
Summary: Changes in baseball bat design, especially with the introduction of the aluminium bat have continued rapidly since the mid 1970's. A limit on bat performance was adopted by the NCAA in 1995. This study aimed to measure actual performance of baseballs and bats in the field, evaluate existing and newly proposed bat and ball testing methods, develop finite element models and bat-ball testing prototypes, enhance injury surveillance and organize a symposium on bat and ball performance.
