Chronic Heart Failure

With chronic elevation of left atrial pressure the pressure is reflected back to the pulmonary capillaries. Effects include diapedesis of rbc through the capillary walls and thickening of alveolar septa (from chronic interstitial edema). Break down of rbc within macrophages gives rise to the hemosiderin-laden macrophages known as "heart failure cells".
