This website gives an overview of the sex reassignment process for trans people. It includes psychological therapy, hormone therapies, and surgery. As with any medical case, the method of treatment and end goal depend on the individual's diagnosis, thus the process described here is not always strictly or completely followed. We hope that the information included in this website provides an appropriate amount of background of the disorder and detail of the medical treatment involved in transitioning such that its place alongside other organ replacement therapies may be delineated. It integrates regenerative medicine and plastic surgery into the creation of new anatomy that has both the desired visual effect and function. Trans people may not be able to reproduce after the hormone therapies and surgery, and the therapies described do not necessarily replace physiological function. However it is imperative to consider that this treatment is considered medically necessary for the patient to attain an adequate quality of life, and this, in fact, may be the highest goal of medicine. This website was prepared by Ken Estrellas, Loren Francis, Adam Kroll, Benedict Landgren Mills, Jen Nykiel, and Chantel Taylor, at Brown University, as a final project for Biology 108: Organ Replacement. |
