There are 3,000 Americans dying every day from diseases I believe could be treated using stem cell technology. -Robert Lanza
The use of embyronic stem cells for the treatment of diseases is an area of biomedicine that is believed to have enormous potential. There have been several breakthrough discoveries in the last few years that have broadedned our knowledge of stem cell therapy, and many believe this field to make very significant progress in the near future.
However, there are still a number of major challenges that must be overcome in order for this therapy to achieve its potential for widespread use. This webpage focuses on one of these challenges: overcoming the immune barrier.
In this type of therapy, stem cells or stem-cell derived cells/organs are introduced into the patient. Hence, there is the possibility that the body's immune response will result in the rejection these foreign cells. This webpage looks at four different approaches to the overcoming this immune barrier.
