Tissue Engineered Skin: From the Lab to the Patient

The promise of tissue engineering has caught people's imagination in recent years. Inventors, scientists, clinicians, investors and governments have come together to try to bring the promise of this technology to those in need of it. A number of companies have been founded on the hope (or hype) of cell therapy and tissue engineering to treat thus far untreatable or poorly treated medical problems. Tissue engineered (TE) skin, because of its relatively simple structural composition was the first such products to gain FDA approval and reach the marketplace. Significant investment in research had to be made to reach this point and while there has been technical success, business success to the extent promised have not yet materialized. This website looks at the successes and failures of the industry as it has progressed along its path to market and hopefully profitability, and speculates on the operational issues still to overcome to realize the potential that everyone has recognized.
