A truly Californian campaign, the campaign included countless celebrities, many of whom spoke out strongly in favor of the proposition, but some of whom, notably Mel Gibson, came out on the other side. The role of celebrities throughout the campaign was no doubt incredibly important, and proves especially interesting when considering that most had little or no knowledge about the details behind stem cells or the proposition itself.

Actor, producer, and director Christopher Reeve spoke out in favor
of the proposition. Following his death from a heart attack on October 10,
he could still be seen in ads lobbying for the proposition. In the ad,
the Superman star who was paralyzed in a horse-riding accident,
urged voters to “stand up for those who can’t.”

Mel Gibson, actor and director of popular movies such as Braveheart and The Passion of Christ, spoke out against the proposition on moral and fiscal grounds. He was quoted as saying:

“I was never in a petri dish, but at one stage I was that little cluster of cells myself, as were you, as was the doctor, as was everybody. Tell me anybody who wasn’t that at some point in their development, and I’ll give you a cigar.”

“Why is the state with the lowest credit rating and the highest debt cost in the country responsible now for borrowing money to pay for dubious research for the rest of the world?"

Actor Dustin Hoffman spoke at a kickoff event for the campaign at Cedar-Sinai Hospital in Los Angeles.

And actor Brad Pitt spoke out in favor of the proposition. In the weeks before the election, he took a well-publicized tour of the stem cell research facilities in California.
