Despite major advances in medical, surgical, and pharmacological interventions, coronary artery disease remains the leading cause of death in the developed world. Within the last two years, however, two implantable devices known as Drug Eluting Stents have become available that show promise to remedy this. In the short term, Drug Eluting Stents are proven to ameliorate the symptoms of coronary artery disease and to greatly decrease the morbidity and mortality associated with it. The history, function, and long term implications of these devices is the topic of this webpage.
