WELCOME TO THE HOME OF THE SHOULDER
Throwing a ball, swinging a racquet, swimming the freestyle, and pumping iron are all activities that would be impossible without the intricate mechanisms of the shoulder. Unfortunately, in competitive sports the shoulder is incredibly vulnerable to an array of injuries, both chronic and acute. This website is designed to explore the shoulder in depth from the perspective of a competitive athlete. In order to help you navigate this site, we have set it up in an intuitive fashion. We first provide the framework for the site by delving into the complex biology of the shoulder. Next we look at sport-specific injuries, indicating which athletes are most susceptible to injury, and the mechanisms of the injuries themselves. We then explore current technology for treating shoulders, looking at physical therapy, and the ever growing science of joint replacement. Finally, we investigate the future of shoulder therapy, looking at tissue engineering, and its ethical implications. We are closer than you may think! If you have any further questions, feel free to email any of us, and we will try to be of help. Happy surfing!
