History

 

  • 1965 : Smith first isolated and grew chondrocytes (1)
  • 1984 : Petersen et al. treatment of patellar defect in rabbit with autologous chondrocytes (2).
  • 1987 : Sweden introduction of ACI and 1 st time performed on human
  • 1994 : Brittberg reports ACI results of 23 patients (3)
  • 1995 : Autologous cartilage implantation availability (4)
  • 1997 : Carticel® by Genzyme approval by FDA for autologous chondrocyte implantation in knees (5).
  • 2000 : Dr. Brian Sennet and Dr. Gerald Williams use autologous chondrocyte implantation for shoulder repair in a 37 year old male at Presbyterian Medical Center of University of Pennsylvania Health System (6).
  • 2002 : Dr. Habermeyer and Dr. Lichtenberg (ATOS-Klinik, Heidelberg, Germany) apply MACI® for cartilage repair in shoulder (7).
  • 2002 : Mitek Worldwide (Johnson & Johnson) partnership with Verigen to begin MACI® clinical trials in the United States (8)
