PROCEDURE

Patient Selection Criteria:

1. All candidates for composite tissue allotransplantation must undergo an extensive evaluation process and be approved for transplant by a patient selection committee.

2. Must be 18-65 who has amputated part of their arm below the elbow and be in general good health

3. Must understand the advantages and risks involved in this experimental surgical technique.

Donor Selection Criteria:

1. Total and irreversible damage to the brain

2. family consent for organ donation

3. Screened according to Kentucky Organ Donor Affiliates (www.kodaorgan.com) guidelines and matched for gender, skin tone, race, age, viral status, and blood type. Size (must be within 15% of recipient size) and compatible blood type are the only donor requirements which are mandatory.

Pre-Transplantation Tests:

1. x-rays
2. extensive blood work
3. physical measurements of affected limb
4. psychiatric evaluation and psychological projective testing (www.handtransplant.com/procedure/psychiatric-issues.html)
5. consults with transplant surgeon, hand and microsurgeon, social worker, physical therapist, orthotist, primary care physician, and any other physician disciplines as appropriate
6. Other tests as indicated (gastrointestinal tests etc.)
