LIVER CELLS
The liver generally has the ability to regenerate
itself and repair injured tissue using liver cells called
hepatocytes.
However, disease or damage can affect this ability. According to the American
Liver Foundation, liver disease results in 26,000 deaths annually in the United
States. With the unreliable supply of donor livers, the possibility of use
of stem cells to repair liver tissue has encouraged much research.
Experimental findings by researchers from the University of Pittsburgh revealed that murine bone marrow derived stem cells became fully functional liver cells through an intermediate oval cell.
The
next step for future research is finding the bone marrow stem cell that differentiates
into the oval cell or discovering the signal that the liver broadcasts to recruit
such cells to the scene of injury. This is the first report that indicates that
bone marrow cells give rise to epithelial cells, which can develop into solid
organs.
