As faculty in a university-college and in a medical school, we pursue the dual goals of research and teaching about the pathogenesis of human disease within a broader social and environmental context. We seek to preserve the values of integrity, academic freedom, open communication, and diversity within this community of scholars and students. As pathologists in the practice of anatomic and clinical pathology, we are dedicated to provide high-quality diagnostic expertise, clinical consultation, and state-of-the-art diagnostic testing and patient data management. As academic pathologists, we also accept the responsibility to train medical and graduate students, residents, and fellows who will become the next generation of scientists and physicians.

Our Goals to Fulfill this Mission are:

To pursue basic, clinical, and translational research on mechanisms, prevention, diagnosis, and treatment of human disease.

To develop innovative teaching programs for undergraduates, medical students, and graduate students at Brown University.

To develop outstanding residency and fellowship training programs in diagnostic and experimental pathology.

To expand collaborative and interdisciplinary research programs with other basic science and clinical faculty at Brown University and its affiliated hospitals.

To provide integrated anatomic and clinical pathology services based on state-of-the-art technology.

To develop and assess new diagnostic techniques and new approaches to the treatment of human disease.

To provide the highest standards of quality assurance and quality control in medical care.

To foster the academic careers of current and future leaders in diagnostic and experimental pathology.

To demonstrate and foster high standards of ethical and professional behavior and respect for colleagues, students, patients, and staff.
